I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and moved to the United States at the age of six. According to my latest DNA test, my ethnicity estimate is 44% Southern Italy, 25% Greece & Albania, 13% Indigenous Eastern South America, 13% Spain, 2% Portugal, 1% France, 1% Nigeria and 1% Benin & Togo.
I grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana where I obtained my undergraduate degree at Loyola University New Orleans. I earned my Ph.D. in political science from Louisiana State University in 2010. My research and teaching interests are in American Politics with an amalgamation of race and ethnic politics, public opinion, public policy and political behavior.
I am an SREB Doctoral Scholar, American Political Science Association (APSA) Minority Fellow and a recipient of an Early Career Award by the Midwest Political Science Association's (MPSA) Latina/o Caucus. My book Partners or Rivals? Power and Latino, Black and White Relations in the 21st Century won the 2015 American Political Science Association REP Section's Best Book Award on Inter-Race Relations in the United States. I have served as President of the MPSA Latina/o Caucus, executive council member of the MPSA and member of the APSA Task Force on Systemic Inequality. I currently serve as co-editor of the PS: Political Science and Politics journal and as a member of the Southern Regional Education Board's (SREB) Advisory Committee for the Center for Innovative Faculty Development. At Wake Forest University, I founded the Race, Inequality and Policy Initiative (RIPI), earned the McCulloch Family Fellowship, won the URECA Award for Excellence in Mentorship, and currently serve as the Associate Chair of the Politics and International Affairs department.
